IVF Update…

3 weeks ago I had my second egg retrieval and they were able to retrieve 21 eggs. Of those 21 eggs, 13 were mature and 12 fertilized. When doing an egg retrieval for IVF, after the eggs are retrieved and fertilized, you get updates on day 3 and day 5 in regards to how the embryos are growing and developing. On day 3, all 12 of our fertilized embryos were still growing and by day 5 only 2 of them had reached blastocyst. The drop off rate with each update is very high and something that is extremely humbling.

My first egg retrieval ended with no embryos making it to day 5 so we were very thankful to end up with 2 this time. Because of our history with miscarriage, we knew we wanted to genetically test any embryos that made it to day 5. Once those 2 embryos made it to day 5 they were biopsied and frozen. The biopsy was sent off and we were told it would take 2-3 weeks to get the results. Not gonna lie… that was a loooonnnng couple weeks! I very much had mentally prepared myself of the possibility that both embryos could come back abnormal. I have several friends that have sent more than 2 eggs off for testing and got 0 back. There are no guarantees with IVF.

But I am happy to say that we found out we have ONE genetically normal embryo! Obviously, we were hoping to walk away from this egg retrieval with more than one but I feel really grateful for that one and the fact we are one step closer to having another baby.

I am going to take a couple months off and focus on getting my body and hormones back to normal and then we will start planning when we will transfer the embryo. In women who have had several failed transfers or multiple miscarriages, my doctor recommends doing a mock transfer prior to the actual transfer. During the mock transfer they will biopsy my uterine lining to make sure there aren’t any issues that could potentially cause miscarriage. It is just an extra step to hopefully increase the chances of the real transfer being successful. After that is done we will proceed with the actual transfer.

I can’t thank everyone enough for the continued thoughts, prayers, and support! It has helped me so much while walking this crazy journey!
